These 3 networks all use Internet technology, but differ by who can access them and why they’re used.

1. Internet

What it is: Public “network of networks” open to everyone worldwide

Purpose: Global information sharing, e-commerce, public web browsing

Daily life examples: Google search, WhatsApp, YouTube, online banking, shopping on Jumia/Konga, UCC eLearning portal

Business examples: Company websites, social media marketing, cloud services like AWS, customer-facing portals 3502d3dc


2. Intranet

What it is: Private network owned by one organization, accessible only to employees/internal users

Purpose: Internal communication, collaboration, document sharing, HR services

3. Extranet

What it is: Private network like an intranet, but extends controlled access to authorized external parties - suppliers, partners, customers, franchisees

Purpose: Secure B2B collaboration without exposing the full internal network

Security: Firewalls + encryption + controlled login

Why businesses use them together:

Intranets streamline internal work and culture. Extranets then “bridge your company with the outside world” to uphold partnerships with suppliers/customers without compromising internal systems. Research shows extranets reduce delivery lead-time and improve customer service, giving competitive advantage.
